Having tasted well over 200 IPAs from around the world, I am a little hard to please. So when Ruud IPA crushed some of my favorite hoppy brews in an IPA tasting, I took notice. Several times a year for the past 5 years, a group up 10-15 of us beer lovers, homebrewers, professional brewers, and lushes have gotten together to taste and rate IPAs from all over the world. We taste 20-25 beers at a time, scoring them on Artwork (bottle and labeling), Hop Aroma, Color, Hop Flavor, Velourocity (smoothness), Aftertaste, and Debaucherocity (need I explain?). Ruud IPA’s robust, complex and refined hop flavor combined with its flawless “velourocity” sends this beer to the top of my list! A perfect balance of fresh hops and well-balanced malts should raise the eyebrows and rumble the bellies of all beer lovers looking for their next hop fix.

The hoppiness helps dress the glass thick with lacing; hazed bronze glow in the light. Slight pungent tone in the hoppy nose, with suggestions of grapefruit and hemp oil. Smoothness runs deep in the medium-bodied ale. Hop bitterness shows that it is an IPA without being so brash that the other elements are pushed aside. Kiss of warmth from the alcohol. Malt holds strong with a dry-ish biscuit flavor. Citric and minty flavors from the hops cradle a subtle fruitiness and nutty yeast. Complex and balanced, drinkable and true to style.

I moved to Seattle about 4 months ago and have been on a mission to try every single IPA available. I visited the brewery about 2 months ago and fell head over heals in love with the Ruud IPA. Best IPA ever.
